Anyone able to recognize variations in forms and color can easily learn basic make-up application for photography. The two main points to remember are knowing where the facial bones lie and the way in which they are shaped, along with being able to recognize the texture and color of the skin. Make-up for fashion photography is applied using the same basic principles as putting on make-up for every day wear; the main difference being the amount used.
It is best to apply make-up using the same kind of light the photographs will be taken in, considering whether the lighting will be warm or cool, natural or artificial. The way the light falls on a face without make-up determines where contours need to be altered. Establish what the best features are and also the tone of the skin.

Q: What is a composite card?
A: A headshot shows an actor in one pose as individual talent. A composite (comp) card shows that a model can present different looks in commercial print or in fashion. An actor who also models may have both an actor’s headshot and a composite card.
Comp cards depict situations, tell a story, and use settings and props. A comp card is normally 5″ x 7″. There is one photograph on the cover and four on the back. With a folding card, there could be eight or ten shots. These photos look like ads or pictures on a printed page such as in a magazine. The purpose is to show that the actor or model can pull off different looks.

In a nutshell, comp cards (short for composite cards) are a form of advertisement and promotion for fashion, glamour and other types of models. They come in many different shapes, layout styles and sizes giving models the benefit of being creative when choosing how their promotional piece will look.

It’s not like I have been asked to exchange a girl’s face all that often in my eight-year career. And it’s not like it is technically impossible or even all that hard. However this particular question reflects the dilemmas clients have to face when the folks upstairs refuse to drop cash for art directors and let the sometimes less focused employees take over that role. While photographers have to make this happen. Misunderstandings, unfair deals on either side and disputes can potentially erupt.
Luckily I’ve been blessed for the vast majority with people who are friendly, competent, knowledgeable or at the very least communicate well about what they need, when they need it and how they need it. But about when they don’t? Or what if your shutterbug is new to his own industry and lacks experience as to how to deal with such a situation?
